Horse Riding Trails

Horse riding trails, 10km in length, have now re-opened within Castlewellan Forest Park on an interim basis, pending a review of the longer term development of horse riding within Mourne Forests.

There are four trails available, one long, one medium and two short trails. These can be ridden in either direction. The trails have been waymarked to enable riders to find their way round with ease.

There is no cost to individual horse riders to access the trails. Groups wishing to organise events or coaching and guiding on the designated trails will have to apply for approval to do so, for which a fee will apply (see section to the left below on ‘How to apply to hold an event in Castlewellan Forest Park’). Usual vehicle access charges will apply for the Forest Park.

Horse Riding In Forests Code

Horse riders should:

  • ride only on trails marked for horse riding
  • give way to walkers
  • obey all warning signs
  • keep clear of forest operations
  • not build jumps or create their own trails
  • remember that forestry vehicles, including lorries, may be using the roads as well.
