Markets and Fairs

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council manages a number of markets and fairs across the district. These are held weekly or monthly in the below towns:

• Castlewellan
• Crossmaglen
• Downpatrick
• Kilkeel
• Newry

Below is information on hire charges, market days, and other important details.

Castlewellan Market

Held monthly, on the second Monday of each month.

Rental charges:

• £12 if paid yearly in advance
• £20 if paid on the day (collected by the Council’s Enforcement Officer)

There are two main fairs in Castlewellan each year:

• First Monday Public Holiday in May
• First Monday in November

Fair rental charges: £20 for a standard pitch, £30 for a larger pitch.
Booking: Must be pre-booked about six weeks before each fair.

Downpatrick Market

Held every Saturday at St Patrick Square, from 8am to 6pm.

Rental: £12 per week, payable quarterly.

Newry Variety Market 

Christmas Market: Thursday 20 November – Sunday 21 December 2025.

This is a pre-booked event; normal market days will not run during this 5-week period.

Regular Market: Over 70 stalls every Thursday and Saturday.

Sell items such as fresh produce, fish, baked goods, clothing, toys, crafts, jewellery, shoes, antiques, rugs, furniture, and household items.

Electricity: No additional charge for stalls.

Market Charges 

Insurance Cover

All traders must hold £5 million Public Liability Insurance.

Membership of the National Market Traders Federation automatically provides cover.
