Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Of the eight Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) designated in Northern Ireland, three are found within our district.

You can easily explore Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s epic geology, biodiversity and archaeology by visiting these stunning areas. Browse the three AONB websites and plan your trip. You can experience the AONBs with our self-guided audio tours or you can choose a personal tour guide whose local knowledge will bring these special land and seascapes to life.  You can also explore our interactive maps to experience our AONBs before you visit.

There are countless ways to enjoy these unique landscapes — take part in volunteering opportunities, go to local events, join training sessions, or simply relax on one of our many peaceful walking trails.
