Councillors’ Allowances and Expenses

Councillors are paid for the time, work and costs involved in representing the people of Newry, Mourne and Down.

The Council’s allowance scheme follows the rules set out in law.

Each Councillor receives a basic yearly allowance for their work. This covers representing local residents, travelling around the district, and attending Council and Committee meetings.

Some Councillors have extra roles or duties. They receive a Special Responsibility Allowance for the extra work involved.

The Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson get separate allowances for their roles as First and Deputy First Citizens.

Full details of the Councillors’ allowance scheme and payments can be found on our website.
