Building Control
Local Councils, through their Building Control Service, have a statutory duty to enforce the Building Regulations. These are a set of construction requirements and they include regulations on structural stability, fire safety, energy conservation, accessibility and standards on health.
The role of Building Control includes assessing your plans and inspecting work at various stages during the build.
Although Building Regulations are a regulatory function of Council and enforcement forms part of our business, our role is to provide a courteous, equitable and efficient service valued by all our customers. In so doing we take pride in providing the highest possible level of service to all our customers.

Area Information
The Council area is split between our two main offices in Downpatrick and Newry.

The Downpatrick office looks after six areas and the Building Control Surveyor for each area is as follows:
Brian Cunningham - Castlewellan, Annsborough, Leitrim, Ballyward and Kilcoo.
Brigin Byrne - Strangford, Ardglass, Ballyhornan, Killough and Downpatrick (North).
Conor Miskelly - Crossgar, Saintfield, Killyleagh and Shrigley.
Kevin O’Connor - Ballykinlar, Clough, Minerstown, Tyrella, Bright and Downpatrick (South)
Seamus Lonergan - Dromara, Ballynahinch, Loughinisland, Drumaness and Seaford.
Terry O’Toole - Newcastle, Dundrum and Maghera.
Applications or inspection requests in these areas should be sent to the Downpatrick Office.
The Newry office looks after six areas and the Building Control Surveyor for each area is as follows:
Trevor Hughes - Newry City Centre (part - Buttercrane, Quays, Bridge Street, Dublin Road), Killeavy, Meigh, Drumintee, Jonesborough, Forkhill, Mullaghbane, Cullyhanna. Silverbridge, Creggan, Crossmaglen and Cullaville.
Paul Smyth - Area between Hilltown and Rostrevor, Burren (part), Warrenpoint, Rostrevor and Killowen.
Kevin Devlin - Newry City Centre (part) Rathfriland Rd, Ballyholland, Warrenpoint Rd, Kilmorey St, Hilltown Rd, Hilltown Village, Mayobridge, Burren, Derryleckagh Rd, Greenan Rd, Greenbank, Saval and Rathfriland (rural).
Raymond Sloane - Newry City Centre (part - Merchants Quay, Monaghan St, Daisy Hill, Pound Rd, Armagh Rd), Bessbrook, Camlough, Whitecross, Belleek and Newtownhamilton.
Peter Daly - Newry City Centre (part), Armagh Rd, Tandragee Rd, Lissummon, Jerrettspass, Carnbane, Belfast Rd and Glenn.
