Be Active for Life

What is Be Active for Life?

Be Active for Life is an initiative created by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council to encourage people of all ages and abilities to get either get involved in physical activity or increase what they are currently doing.
 
If you want low, moderate or high-level intensity, there will be something to suit! 
 
The programme is currently delivering over 60 daytime classes, Monday to Friday across the district. 
 
The classes are effective, fun and with a strong social element with many participants are involved in lots of different classes to improve their health and wellbeing.  By offering affordable classes at £2.20 per session, the program ensures that cost is not a barrier to participation, allowing everyone the opportunity to stay active and healthy.
 
The programme promotes lifelong fitness and emphases that staying active is essential for maintaining a healthy, balanced lifestyle. 
 

What are the Be Active for Life Classes?

General Classes:

Chi Me: Gentle, flowing movements inspired by Tai Chi, with deep breathing to improve relaxation, balance and flexibility.
Water Aerobics: Low-impact exercise in the water, kind to joints and suitable for all fitness levels.
Teen Gym: A supervised gym session introducing young people to equipment and exercises with the support of a qualified instructor.
Parent and Baby Fitness: Parents can enjoy light exercise while their baby relaxes or plays nearby in a welcoming environment.
50+ Gym: A guided gym session for those aged 50+, with friendly support from an instructor.
Low Intensity Interval Training (LIIT): Easy-to-follow interval exercises, perfect for beginners or those returning to activity.
Spin Indoor Cycling / Learn to Spin: Beginner-friendly cycling sessions on stationary bikes, building confidence and fitness at your own pace.
Line Dancing/Dance: Learn choreographed dance routines in a sociable and enjoyable environment.
Be Active Health Network: (Not a physical Activity) A supportive social group with regular guest speakers offering advice and tips in their field, keep an eye on our socials for updates regarding our guest speakers. 
 
 

Down Leisure Centre Specific Classes:

Bootcamp: A higher-energy workout designed to challenge fitness and boost strength and stamina.
Lunch Time Circuits: A quick and effective mid-day workout to energise your afternoon.
Chair Aerobics: Gentle, low-intensity exercises performed while seated - great for those with limited mobility.
Walking Netball: A slower-paced, accessible version of netball that’s easy to pick up and great for all abilities.
Circuits: A mix of exercises suitable for all abilities.

Newry Leisure Centre Specific Classes:

Nordic Walking: Walking with poles to engage the upper body and improve posture, strength and overall fitness.
Strength and Balance: A low-intensity class designed to build strength, improve balance and reduce the risk of falls.
Boccia: An inclusive target ball sport, similar to bowls, suitable for all ages and abilities.
Badminton: Fun and sociable games of badminton; racquets provided.

Newcastle Specific Classes:

Be Active for Life Circuits and Socials: A combination of light circuit-based exercise followed by time to chat and socialise.
Be Active Gym: A supportive, instructor-led gym session for all fitness levels.
Chair Based Exercises: Gentle movements to improve mobility and circulation, carried out while seated.

How to Book:

1. Download the NMD Be Active app
2. Select your leisure centre of choice
3. Tap the Be Active for Life tile
4. Select your class & proceed to payment
Or drop into your local leisure centre to book direct.

Costs:

£2.20 per class
£32.70 for 20 sessions
£16.40 Direct Debit per month for unlimited classes
