Annual Schools’ Environmental Poster Competition

The Council’s  Sustainability team organise an environmental poster competition each year for Primary and Secondary schools in the district. Pupils are asked to produce an eye catching, colourful poster on an environmental theme of their choice.

The overall winners of this year’s main prize were pupils Darcy Sawey, St Jospeh’s Primary School, Carnacaville and Clara Doran, Newry High School..

As part of their prize both pupils’ designs, featuring the slogans “Say No 2 Plastic” and “Save Our Ocean. Stop Pollution”, will be displayed for two weeks in 2024 on billboards in Newry City and Downpatrick.

Runners up in the Junior section of the competition were Talia Lennon, St Patrick’s Primary School, Burrenreagh, Fiona Murray, St Bronagh’s Primary School, Rostrevor, Leah McEnteggart, Clonalig Primary School, Culloville, and Ruby Aiken, Glasswater Primary School, Crossgar. Secondary school runners up were Jane Keenan, Sacred Heart Grammar School, Newry; Aoife Kellett, Assumption Grammar School, Ballynahinch, St Louis Grammar School, Kilkeel and Maisie McFerran, Blackwater Integrated College, Downpatrick.

All ten pupils are pictured at a reception held by the Chairperson of Council Councillor Valerie Harte where they received gift vouchers and specially framed copies of their posters.
