Special Circumstances

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council provides an Assisted Collection Service for residents who are unable to present their bins for collection due to age, disability or a medical condition.

This service is only available where:

  • The resident lives alone and is unable to present their bin(s) for collection; or
  • There is no person living at the property who is reasonably able to present the bin(s) for collection.

Applications are subject to assessment and will require supporting information.

Approval is subject to a risk assessment to ensure there is safe access to the property for collection crews and vehicles. Access routes and bin storage locations must be maintained in a safe condition and allow adequate vehicle access and turning space where required.

Assisted collections are subject to periodic review and may be withdrawn if eligibility criteria are no longer met or safe access cannot be maintained.

Data Protection

Any medical information provided will be used solely to assess eligibility for the service and will be processed in accordance with data protection legislation.

Additional Waste Capacity

In exceptional circumstances, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council may provide additional waste capacity to households that generate more waste than can reasonably be accommodated within the standard service.

Applications may be considered where:
Six or more permanent residents live at the property; or
A member of the household has a medical condition that generates additional waste.
Applications are subject to assessment and may require supporting information.

Additional Bins and Charges

Where an application is approved, residents may be eligible for:
An additional Blue Recycling Bin – £53
An additional Black Residual Waste Bin – £69

Please note that additional Black Bins are only provided where a medical need has been demonstrated and approved by the Council.
Larger household size alone does not qualify for an additional Black Bin.
Additional capacity is subject to periodic review and may be withdrawn where eligibility criteria are no longer met.
