Each group can borrow one litter-picking pack, complete with up to six litter pickers, bags and gloves. To ensure packs remain complete, litter pickers cannot be borrowed individually.
To book a pack email: besustainable@nmandd.org at least one week before your clean-up.
Please include:
- The date and location of your clean-up
- A daytime contact number
We’ll contact you to arrange collection of your pack. After your clean-up, all borrowed litter pickers must be returned to the Council.
If your group would prefer its own litter-picking equipment, you can apply to Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful’s Adopt a Spot Scheme (see below).
Important safety information
Volunteers are not insured by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council. You take part in litter picks at your own risk, so please make sure:
- A risk assessment is carried out
- You have Public Liability Insurance in place before starting
- Be extra careful when picking litter near roads or water. Do not touch dangerous items such as syringes, chemical canisters, or anything sharp — instead, report them to the Council.

Try to separate recyclable waste where possible. For example, bag cans, plastic bottles, glass, and wood separately, so they can be recycled.
Adopt a Spot
If your group would like its own litter-picking pack, sign up for Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful’s Adopt a Spot Scheme.
The scheme enables volunteers to adopt and care for an area in their community. Groups that join receive a free litter-picking pack.
