Be Active Summer Programme - July and August 2022

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council have a fun filled summer programme for children of all ages and abilities to enjoy this summer. There are promotions across our Leisure Centres throughout the summer months and also the chance to sign up to Multi Sports and Pop Up Play Sessions for Primary School aged children.

There is a Teen Activity Week in plan as well as the opportunity to book into the ‘Wheelie Active’ programme and autism friendly swim sessions.  The Council’s summer programme includes everything from outdoor swimming, fishing camps as well as many more Council funded sports programmes throughout the district.

Multi Sports Sessions

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Multi-Sports sessions provide the opportunity for primary school aged children to take part in active, fun and rewarding sporting activities. The focus of the sessions is to help and support each child’s development and enjoyment. The main benefit of the multi-sports camps is to allow children to try many different sports at a young age to broaden their interests and knowledge in physical activity.

Key information

Age Range: p1-p7 (Children attending must have completed primary 1 in 2021/2022 academic school year)

Locations: Newry Leisure Centre, Down Leisure Centre, Kilkeel Leisure Centre, Newcastle Centre and Ballynahinch Centre

Length of Programme: 4 weeks

Dates: Weeks commencing 18, 25 July as well as 1 and 8 August 2021.

Times: 10am – 12pm – Primary 1- Primary 3 (x1 session) 1pm – 3pm – Primary 4 - Primary 7 (x1 session)

Price: £10 per child per week

Pop Up Free Play Sessions

Pop Up Free Play sessions will involve unstructured activity that encourages children to use their imagination, such as playing with toys, sports equipment, the environment and natural resources. Active free play is also a good way to help your kids meet their daily physical activity requirements. These sessions are free and Play Board Leaders will be at hand at each session to provide play resources and to support and encourage children to get involved. These sessions will take place in Summer 2022 in the following locations:

Age Range: Primary 1 to Primary 7

  • Crossmaglen Community Centre: Start 4 July (5 days) 9:30am -12:30pm P4-P7 and 1:30pm to 4:30pm P1 -P3
  • Newry Leisure Centre: Start 18  July (5 days) 9:30am -12:30pm P4-P7 and 1:30pm to 4:30pm P1 -P3
  • Kilkeel Leisure Centre: Start 25 July (5 days) 9:30am -12:30pm P4-P7 and 1:30 to 4:30 P1 -P3
  • Down Leisure Centre: Start 1 August (5 days) 9:30am -12:30pm P4-P7 and 1:30 to 4:30 P1 -P3
  • Saintfield Community Centre: Start 8  August (5 days) 9:30am -12:30pm P4-P7 and 1:30pm to 4:30pm P1 -P3
  • Castlewellan Community Centre: Start 15 August (5 days) 9:30am -12:30pm P4-P7 and 1:30pm to 4:30pm P1 -P3

Inclusive and Disability ‘Wheelie Active Programme

Wheelie Active sessions have a wide variety of disability sports equipment including accessible bikes, sports wheelchairs, Boccia sets and other specialist equipment which is to be used throughout the sessions as required. This is an exciting opportunity for children with disabilities aged 4 – 12 years old so that they can improve their motor skills, health and wellbeing.

Teen Activity Week

Multi-Sports sessions provide the opportunity for young people aged 12 – 15 years old to take part in active and engaging sporting activities. The focus of the sessions is to help and support young people to ‘Be Active’ and have fun this summer. The main benefit of the Multi-Sports sessions is to allow all involved to try different sports and activities to cater for a range of interests and skills development. The Netball sessions are specifically aimed at young women to help reduce that gap in sporting opportunities and to inspire teenage girls to be more physically active in a supportive environment where they can make new friends and have fun.

Age Range: 12-15

Locations: Newry Leisure Centre and Down Leisure Centre

Length of Programme: 1 week

Dates: 15 – 19 August 2022

Time: 11am-1pm (multi sports sessions) 2pm-4pm (Netball skills sessions)

Price: £10 per week

Booking Requirements: Registering and Payments via a mixture of online and at Front of House (FOH) for each site.

Registration T&Cs: Will be available to all at time of booking

Terms and conditions for all Sport Activity Programmes  

  • Children attending the multi-sports camps must have completed primary 1 in 2021/22 academic school year.
  • Please arrive no more than 10 minutes before the activity is due to start and be prompt for collection times.
  • At arrival and collection there may be a queue, please be patient.
  • Do not attend the sessions if experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.
  • Wash hands, well and often, sanitiser will be available at all sessions.
  • It is recommended all participants wear suitable footwear, casual clothing and should be prepared for indoor and outdoor activities.
  • Participants are advised to bring a refillable water bottle and one healthy snack.
  • Parents/Guardians are responsible for applying sunscreen to participants under 18 before they arrive.
  • Please note we are unable to provide one to one personal care such as toileting and feeding.
  • All bookings are non-refundable and non-transferrable. Credit notes will not be provided for non-attendance.
