Slieve Gullion District Electoral Area Hosts Falls Prevention Workshop
As part of Falls Prevention Week, the Slieve Gullion District Electoral Area (DEA) Forum recently hosted a Balance for Life Falls Prevention Workshop in Crossmaglen Community Centre. The workshop was aimed at supporting residents to reduce their risk of falling and to help maintain independence.
The workshop was delivered on Thursday 25 September by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, the Southern Health and Social Care Trust (SHSCT) and the Public Health Agency. It formed part of a wider strategy to promote safe and healthy living for older adults and those at risk of falls.
Attendees heard from the Southern Trust’s Promoting Wellbeing Team and Falls Team and the Council’s Health Improvement Team, as well as receiving professional advice from physiotherapists, podiatrists and pharmacists. They also had the opportunity to take part in a Strength and Balance Taster Session delivered by the Southern Trust. Residents were also able to register for a free home safety assessment while information stands provided a wide range of health resources. The event created a valuable opportunity to socialise, with refreshments and resource packs available for all attendees.
Councillor David Taylor, Chair of the Slieve Gullion DEA Forum said, “Deaths because of falls in Northern Ireland have doubled over the last 10 years. Workshops like this are invaluable in raising awareness and encouraging residents to reduce the risk factors associated with falls.
“The Council offers free home safety checks for residents over 65, families with children under five, and those who are vulnerable (subject to assessment) and I would encourage residents to avail of this service. We look forward to delivering similar events across the district in the coming months”.
