Local Volunteers Celebrated at Afternoon Tea Hosted by Council Chairperson
A heartwarming afternoon of celebration and community spirit unfolded on Friday 30 May, as Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Pete Byrne, welcomed volunteers and community groups to a special ‘Together We Shine’ event at the Whistledown Hotel in Warrenpoint.
The event marked one of the final engagements of Councillor Byrne’s term in office and was delivered in collaboration with Volunteer Now, a regional organisation dedicated to supporting and championing volunteering across Northern Ireland.
Staff from Volunteer Now attended the event, playing a key role in its delivery by helping to identify many of the local groups who were recognised on the day. Their involvement was a valued part of the afternoon, reinforcing the collaborative spirit of the occasion.
Bringing together representatives from a wide range of groups—many of which focus on inclusion, mental health, diversity, and grassroots support—the afternoon tea recognised the power of volunteering to transform lives and strengthen communities.
Chairperson Councillor Byrne used the occasion to express his admiration and appreciation for the work being done quietly and consistently by local heroes. He said, “It’s been a privilege to witness first-hand the selfless dedication of people who ask for nothing in return, yet give so much. This event was about putting the spotlight on them—and simply saying thank you.”
Throughout his time in office, the Chairperson has placed particular emphasis on supporting initiatives that foster connection and inclusion, including youth-led programmes, mental health projects and community hubs such as the Green Spaces Growing Project and local Men’s Sheds.
Guests also heard about the impact of Cuan Mhuire, the Chairperson’s chosen charity for the year—a vital organisation providing rehabilitation and hope for those affected by addiction. He said, “Volunteers are the backbone of Cuan Mhuire. Their commitment makes the organisation’s life-changing work possible and I want to acknowledge their tireless efforts.”
The afternoon provided an opportunity not only for recognition but for volunteers to come together, share their stories and celebrate a shared commitment to making a positive impact. As the event drew to a close, Chairperson Councillor Byrne left attendees with a message of gratitude and encouragement, “You are the reason our district continues to thrive with compassion and resilience. Your kindness uplifts others—and that deserves to be honoured."
