Council Celebrates World Tourism Day in the Mourne Gullion Strangford UNESCO Global Geopark
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council marked World Tourism Day with a special event on Friday 19 September, to celebrate the thriving tourism industry across the district and the global recognition of the Mourne Gullion Strangford as a UNESCO Global Geopark.
The ‘Celebration of our Tourism Industry’ event brought together tourism businesses to the Cloughmore Centre in Kilbroney Forest Park. It highlighted the growing importance of sustainable tourism and the unique opportunities presented by a UNESCO designation. The event also provided a valuable platform for collaboration, networking and knowledge-sharing across the local tourism sector. Guests had the chance to hear from industry experts, engage with the Mourne Gullion Strangford Geopark and Tourism teams and collaborate with fellow businesses to shape the future of tourism in the region.
Speaking about the significance of the event, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Philip Campbell said, “Tourism here is more than an industry – it is a way of sharing our stories, our landscapes, our culture and our hospitality with the world. The UNESCO Global Geopark award for Mourne Gullion Strangford is an incredible achievement, reflecting the outstanding natural beauty, heritage and culture of our region. This event is about celebrating the people and businesses who bring our destination to life and ensuring we continue to grow in a sustainable and innovative way.”
The Mourne Gullion Strangford Geopark, which encompasses the majestic Mourne Mountains, the mythical Ring of Gullion and the spectacular Strangford Lough, has placed Newry, Mourne and Down firmly on the global map as a destination of world-class significance. The UNESCO award also underpins the Council’s commitment to protecting the area’s unique environment while supporting economic growth and community wellbeing.
Chairperson Councillor Philip Campbell continued, “From accommodation providers and visitor attractions to food, drink, golf, outdoor activity and adventure, cultural and heritage experiences, the collective efforts of businesses and organisations continue to strengthen the region’s reputation as a must-visit destination.
“Newry, Mourne and Down District Council will continue to work closely with local businesses to ensure that tourism remains a driver of sustainable growth, creating memorable experiences for visitors while safeguarding the natural and cultural heritage that makes the region unique.”
