Council Advances Restoration of Lock 6 on Newry Canal
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has appointed a dedicated Integrated Consultancy Team (ICT) to support the restoration of Lock 6 on the historic Newry Canal, marking a significant step forward in protecting and enhancing one of Northern Ireland’s most important heritage assets.
The Newry Canal, one of the oldest summit-level canals in the British Isles and a scheduled monument, is a vital part of the region’s heritage. Its restoration supports key local and regional priorities, including heritage preservation, sustainable infrastructure, active travel and tourism development.
In a complementary initiative, the Council has also secured grant aid from the Department for Communities through the Historic Environment Fund (HEF) — Regeneration Stream 2025/26. This funding will enable a Visual Condition Survey of five lock chambers along the canal, providing a detailed assessment of their structural condition and helping to inform future conservation planning and investment.
This proactive approach will ensure that future works across the canal network are evidence-based, strategically planned and aligned with best practice in heritage conservation.
Speaking about the projects, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Phillip Campbell said, “The restoration of Lock 6 on the Newry Canal represents a significant investment in our district’s heritage, safety and future prosperity. The appointment of the Integrated Consultancy Team is an important step forward in progressing this work. Alongside this, the Historic Environment Fund support will allow us to carry out essential surveys to guide future conservation efforts.
Chairperson Cllr Philip Cambell continued, “These initiatives are about more than conserving a historic structure, they are about strengthening community wellbeing, supporting active travel and enhancing our tourism offering, while ensuring this remarkable waterway remains a safe, accessible and vibrant asset for generations to come.”
Further updates on both projects will be provided as work progresses.
