Newry Pantomime Celebrates 50 Years of Magic, Laughter, and Community Spirit
This year marks a golden milestone for one of Newry’s most beloved traditions. The Newry Pantomime is celebrating 50 years of bringing joy, laughter and spectacular performances to generations of audiences.
Since beginning in 1976, the Newry Pantomime has grown into a cherished cultural event that unites families, friends and community members every festive season. From dazzling costumes and catchy songs to its unique blend of humour and heart, the Panto has become a cornerstone of Newry Town Hall’s calendar, delighting audiences young and old.
The celebration from Newry Panto Players is particularly poignant this year, following the passing of Charlie Smyth in November at the age of 92. Charlie was a much loved and fondly remembered source of strength and inspiration for the Panto, whose loss will be keenly felt. Happily, his legacy will remain in the experience of the many actors, technicians and directors whom he encouraged.
To celebrate 50 years of pantomime magic and as a tribute to Charlie, this year’s production Aladdin, promises to be the biggest and brightest yet. The talented volunteer cast and crew, many of whom have been part of the panto family for decades, are preparing a show filled with surprise appearances, special tributes and golden moments that reflect the group’s incredible journey.
Joining the cast on their opening night where she presented a commemorative vase to mark their 50th anniversary, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Deputy Chairperson, Councillor Geraldine Kearns said, “Reaching 50 years is an extraordinary achievement. The Newry Pantomime has been built on the dedication of countless volunteers, performers, and supporters who have given their time, creativity and heart to make each show magical. This year, we celebrate not just an anniversary, but a community legacy.
“Over the years, the pantomime has nurtured young talent from the immediate area of Newry and beyond and fostered a lasting sense of community pride. Generations of families have taken part, with many former performers and their children returning year after year, proving that once you’re part of the Newry Panto, you’re part of the family for life.”
The 50th anniversary show is running until Saturday 24 January at Newry Town Hall. Tickets are available daily from the Buttercrane Shopping Centre and before the show at each of the performances. For full details check out ‘Newry Panto’ on Facebook.
