Emergencies

The Council works in conjunction with emergency services, government agencies and voluntary organisations during major emergencies affecting the Newry, Mourne and Down district.

Major Emergencies

  • In the event of a major emergency in our district area, we can help in different ways.
  • Make buildings such as leisure and community centres available to people.
  • Provide health and safety advice on cleaning up after major flooding or pollution.
  • Assess structural damage to buildings.
  • Co-ordinate and lead multi-agency meetings to plan recovery.
We are a member of the Southern Emergency Preparedness Group which brings together over 65 different organisations who work together to plan how to help the public in an emergency.

In the event of a serious emergency such as a dangerous building that is at risk of collapse, please contact Building Control.

Reports relating to workplace health and safety incidents or accidents should be reported directly to the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI), who will disseminate reports to the appropriate enforcing authority.
