Council Launches District-Wide Seniors’ Summer Scheme
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is breaking new ground launching a summer scheme for senior citizens.
Activities have been planned across all seven District Electoral Areas (DEAs), with the various events providing opportunities for senior citizens to improve their wellbeing, make new connections, boost their confidence, have fun, sample new activities and visit some hidden gems on their doorstep.
A number of Council partners are supporting the summer initiative including the Northern Ireland Executive’s T:BUC Programme, Public Health Agency, Newry Mourne and Down Age Friendly District, Southern Health and Social Care Trust and County Down Rural Community Network.
From fascinating local history and heritage tours to beautiful gardens, scenic locations and interactive experiences, fun activities and relaxing activities, there's something for everyone.
The Newry, Slieve Gullion and Crotlieve DEAs are organising a series of events between 29 June and 3 July which begin in Silverbridge and include dance, circus skills, Boccia and Botanical Bingo.

They kick off with an event at Newcastle Community Cinema on 30 June discovering the story of the Mournes through the years viewing archive footage and an engaging historical talk on Newcastle harbour.
On 29 July, there’s a guided visit through the beautiful Annesley Walled Garden and stunning Arboretum at Castlewellan Forest Park, while on August 25, between there is an opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Ireland's patron saint with visits to St Patrick's Grave, Down Cathedral, the High Cross and Down County Museum in Downpatrick.
On 28 September, the focus switches to Delamont Country Park outside Killyleagh and the opportunity to experience an interactive tourism bus, join an expert foraging guide to discover edible treasures and learn how to safely identify and gather seasonal ingredients in the park.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Glyn Hanna said, “Providing a summer scheme for our senior residents is an excellent idea and I am delighted there will be events across our DEAs.
“There will be something for everyone, with the events providing an opportunity for people to connect and enjoy some fun activities, as well as visiting places of interest. Thanks also to the organisations supporting this initiative.”
Cllr Hanna said the seniors’ summer scheme provides an opportunity for people to get out, stay active, improve their wellbeing, make new friendships, enjoy themselves and take part in a range of activities.
He added: “The summer programme is not only about ensuring the participants have fun, but a way of giving back for what they have contributed to our district over many years and show them how much we support and value them.”
Places for all events across the DEAs are limited and booking is essential by contacting shona.mcilhone@nmandd.org when timings will be provided.
