Council Chairperson Thanks Charities, Community Groups and Key Workers in His Christmas Message.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Philip Campbell, has issued his Christmas message, highlighting the strength of community spirit across the district, the vital role of local arts and culture, the importance of supporting local businesses, and his appreciation for charities, community organisations and key workers who provide essential support throughout the year.
Reflecting on the season, Cllr Campbell said something truly magical happens across the district at this time of year. He noted that streets shine a little brighter, towns feel warmer and communities come together in a way that defines the character of Newry, Mourne and Down.
He said being part of the Christmas light switch-on ceremonies in communities right across the district has been one of the real joys of his time as Chairperson.
Chairperson Cllr Campbell said, “Watching families gather, children bursting with excitement and neighbours pausing to share a moment of festive cheer reminds me just how lucky we are to call this place home.
“As Chairperson this year as well as supporting young people, I also want to highlight the importance of the arts in our community – the people who bring so much heart to this season.
“Through music, performance, theatre and handcrafted gifts, they sprinkle festive magic everywhere they go. The arts are that gentle thread that brings our communities together, adding colour, warmth and soul to our celebrations.”
Reinforcing his commitment to the local economy, Cllr Campbell encouraged residents to shop local throughout the festive period.
The Chairperson said, “When you shop with our local traders and crafters, you’re not just choosing a gift, you’re choosing to support neighbours, families and businesses who work incredibly hard all year round.
“Many are staying open late to make Christmas shopping easier, offering everything from beautiful handmade crafts to thoughtful presents you won’t find anywhere else. Every purchase helps keep jobs here, strengthens our towns and keeps our high streets alive with energy and community spirit.”
He added that the district’s artisan markets continue to showcase exceptional local talent, creativity and festive flavour.
“Strolling through them, you can feel the buzz, the pride of local makers, bakers and producers sharing what they love with a smile,” said Cllr Campbell. “This Christmas, let’s wrap our support around them just as warmly as they wrap their talents around our community.”
The Chairperson also extended his thanks to those who work tirelessly to support others, particularly at this time of year. “As we prepare for the holidays, I want to offer my heartfelt thanks to our charities, community groups and key workers who support people not just at Christmas, but every single day of the year. Their kindness is a steady light that guides many through difficult times.”
Looking ahead to 2026, Chairperson Cllr Campbell encouraged residents to recognise outstanding individuals within the community by submitting nominations for the upcoming Civic Awards.
The Council Chairperson continued, “If you know someone who goes the extra mile, a volunteer, carer, young person making a difference, or a neighbour who’s always there when needed, please put their name forward for my Civic Awards Evening in the New Year on 20 February in the Millbrook Lodge Hotel.
“Please take the time to nominate an unsung hero in our community so we may celebrate their contributions to bettering our shared society.”
Chairperson Cllr Campbell concluded by extending his warm wishes to everyone across the district, “I want to wish everyone a warm, joyful and truly Merry Christmas. And whatever your faith or belief, may the New Year bring you peace, happiness and hope.
