Celebration Event Marks Conclusion of Neurodivergent Summer Camp
Castlewellan Community Centre hosted a celebration event to mark the end of a very successful two-week Neurodivergent Summer Camp on 19 August, with young people and their families joining programme partners and community representatives.
The programme was funded and supported by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s Mournes and Slieve Croob District Electoral Area (DEA) Forums, County Down Rural Community Network (CDRCN) and Housing for All, with the collective investment enabling the summer scheme to provide a safe, inclusive and engaging environment for neurodivergent young people.
Around 40 young people took part in the programme, enjoying a wide range of fun and interactive activities designed to promote social inclusion, personal development, confidence building and friendship, with the scheme offering participants the opportunity to engage in a structured programme of activities while enjoying a supportive and welcoming atmosphere.
Each of the participants received a certificate in recognition of their involvement and achievements throughout the programme.
Slieve Croob DEA Chairperson, Councillor Alan Lewis, highlighted the importance of providing opportunities for neurodivergent young people to participate in activities that support their wellbeing, development and social connections.
"This programme has provided a much-needed opportunity for young people to engage in a fun-filled and varied programme of activities within a safe and supportive environment. It has enabled participants to build confidence, make new friends and enjoy meaningful experiences during the summer holidays,” he said.
Event organisers expressed their gratitude to the Mournes and Slieve Croob DEA Forums, County Down Rural Community Network and Housing for All for their support, which ensured the successful delivery of the programme.
The success of the two-week summer camp demonstrates the value of partnership working in providing inclusive opportunities for young people and supporting families across the local community.
