Polish Supplementary School Finds New Home
The Polish Supplementary School which has been operating in Newry for eight years has now moved to new premises in St. Joseph’s Boys High School.
Since its opening in 2008, the Polish Supplementary School has used the Polish language to provide children from the Polish Community living in Newry and Mourne with much needed education in the history and culture of their native country. The school has provided a vital link between local and migrant cultures and helped Polish children and families integrate within the local community.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson Councillor Mickey Ruane attended the opening day of the school and said, “I am delighted that the Polish Supplementary School, which represents and serves the largest minority ethnic community in the district, has found a new home and is able to continue its important work in retaining and developing children’s ability to speak their mother tongue.”
St. Joseph’s Boys High School Principal Declan Murray added, “When approached by the Polish Supplementary School we were committed to doing whatever we could to help as a community-orientated school. The energy and enthusiasm of the children who attend and those who organise the school is fantastic and we are looking forward to working together further in the future.”
