Market Traders Promote ‘Make it Local’ Campaign
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick met with local market traders in Ballynahinch to highlight the success of the weekly market and to promote it as part of the ‘Make It Local’ campaign.
Councillor Fitzpatrick was delighted to meet Colm Mulligan and the market traders in the Square, Ballynahinch in order to recognise the valuable contribution the stall holders gave to the regeneration project in Ballynahinch. During the Council led Environmental Improvement scheme last year, the market was temporarily relocated from of the Square to help facilitate the implementation of the scheme and the co-operation of the stall holders allowed the Council to redevelop the Square and create an enhanced open space in the centre of the town.
Councillor Fitzpatrick said, “The support of the market traders in facilitating the Ballynahinch scheme played an important role in the successful completion of the Public Realm project. I am pleased to see the market operating in the newly designed Square which provides such an attractive focal point for the town.”
Councillor Fitzpatrick also confirmed her support for ‘Make it Local’ initiatives saying, “I would encourage local shoppers to embrace the concept of shopping locally and the promotion of Local First. It is vital the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council work in partnership with local retailers and market traders to ensure the sustainability of vibrant city and town centres across the district and I hope that as many local businesses as possible embrace the ‘Make it Local’ approach to business practices.”
