‘Family Friendly’ Down County Museum Receives Award
Down County Museum has won a prestigious award for its commitment to providing family friendly facilities and activities at the Museum.
The 2018 Northern Ireland Hospitality Awards ceremony took place on 8 October. The awards acknowledge the efforts that hospitality industry professionals invest in ensuring their customers always receive high-quality service and memorable experiences.
The awards celebrate the most dedicated and successful hospitality professionals and businesses in Northern Ireland, with venues nominated by members of the public and judged on a variety of criteria. The Museum was nominated in the Family Venue of the Year category and won the Highly Commended award.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Deputy Chairperson, Councillor Oksana McMahon said, “I am delighted that the Museum has received this award as a leading family venue in Northern Ireland.
“I want to congratulate the Museum team on its work in providing excellent facilities for local families and visitors from outside the area and thank the Northern Ireland Hospitality Awards for making this award to a very deserving venue. I would encourage all families to visit the Museum, which displays the rich history of our area in a way that is exciting for everyone.”
The Museum aims to provide a stimulating experience for families and visitors of all ages, and regularly puts on family friendly events which include hands-on activities, performances, special events for under 5s, and seasonal workshops. In addition, the Museum delivers hands-on elements in its galleries and displays to encourage active exploration of the collections and local heritage.
This year the Museum has seen an increase in visitor numbers across all age groups, particularly among families with young children. It is hoped that the award will highlight the work the Museum does to provide a welcoming, safe and stimulating space which encourages learning and interaction in positive and fun ways.
