Déanann an Chomhairle ceiliúradh ar an Ghaeilge ar ‘Lá Domhanda na hIlchineálachta Cultúrtha ar son Comhphlé agus Forbartha’

Tá Comhairle Ceantair an Iúir, Mhúrn agus an Dúin i ndiaidh sraith nua de 10 bhfíseán Gaeilge le fotheidil a choimisiúnú a chuidíonn le tábhacht na huileghabhálachta a léiriú ar ‘Lá Domhanda na hIlchineálachta Cultúrtha ar son Comhphlé agus Forbartha’.  Maoinithe ag Feidhmeannas Thuaisceart Éireann, tá réimse leathan de chainteoirí ag glacadh páirte sna físeáin spreagúla - ó dhamhsóir Gaelach de shliocht na Nigéire Elliot Kwelele a bhfuil Corn Domhanda bainte aige roinnt uaireanta, comh maith le Protastúnach agus Aontachtaí Dr Ian Malcolm a dhéanann cur síos ar an dáimh atá aige don Ghaeilge.

Siar sa bhliain 2002, d’fhógair Comhthionól Gineáralta na Náisiúin Aontaithe  ‘Lá Domhanda na hIlchineálachta Cultúrtha ar son Comhphlé agus Forbartha’ le bheith ann ar an 21 Bealtaine, chun deis a thabhairt do dhaoine tuiscint níos doimhne a fhorbairt ar luachanna ilchinéalachta cultúrtha.

Sruthfar an tsraith de 10 bhfiseán gairid dar teideal “Is leatsa í, it belongs to you!” ar ardáin mheán sóisialta de chuid na Comhairle ón Aoine 21 Bealtaine go dtí Aoine 5 Meitheamh.  Taispeánann na gearrscannáin seo saibhreas na hilchineáltacha cultúrtha taobh istigh dár bpobail chomhroinnte, i dTuaisceart na hÉireann agus níos faide i gcéin, atá ag athrú agus ag forbairt i rith an ama.  Déanfaidh na fiseáin bhríomhaire, eolasacha seo cuid de na steiréitíopaí réamhbheitheach a bhaineann leis an Ghaeilge a bhréagnú.  Is é an aidhm atá leo ná feasacht a ardú gur le gach duine an Ghaeilge, is cuma cé acu cúlra, dath craicinn nó prionsabail atá acu.  

Sa chéad fhíseán béarfaidh Dr Niall Comer de bhunadh an Iúir léargas gairid ar stair ríshliocht Bagenal a chuaigh siar go dtí an seachtú agus tús an ochtú aois déag san Iúr.  Foghlaimeoidh muid faoin oidhreacht a bhaineann leis agus an tionchar a bhí ag an teaghlach rathúil seo ar an Iúr agus an ceantar máguaird.  

Dúirt Cathaoirleach na Comhairle, an Comhairleoir Laura Devlin: “Tá lúcháir orm na 10 bhfíseán spreagúil seo a sheoladh mar chuid de cheiliúradh Chomhairle Ceantair an Iúir, Mhúrn agus an Dúin ar ‘Lá Domhanda na hIlchineálachta Cultúrtha ar son Comhphlé agus Forbartha’.  Tá sé tábhachtach go ndéanann muid machnamh ar an ilchineálacht inár bpobal ina iomláine agus go mbíonn muid ag céiliúradh cultúir agus cúlraí na ndaoine a fhorbraíonn agus a labhraíonn an Ghaeilge.”  

Casfar ar dhamhsóir Gaelach de shliocht na Nigéire Elliot Kwelele a bhfuil Corn Domhanda bainte aige roinnt uaireanta.  Déanfaidh an Dr Ian Malcolm atá ina Protastúnach agus Aontachtaí cur síos ar an dáimh atá aige don Ghaeilge. Inseoidh Linda Ervine faoin tiomantas atá aici an Ghaeilge a fhorbairt agus le tuiscint a spreagadh i bpobail Aontachtacha in oirthear Bhéal Feirste agus i gcéin gur theanga ionchuimsitheach í an Ghaeilge.  Gheofar amach faoin phaisean atá ag an fhile agus iriseoir Ola Majekodunmi don teanga agus a dílseacht le roinnt réamhthuairimí a bhaineann léi a athrú. Labhróidh Cian Ó Gríofa ón ardán ar líne Gaylgeoirí, faoin dúil atá aige a bheith mar dhea-thionchar ar an phobal LADTA+. Gheobhaidh lucht féachana taobh istigh de na seacht ndáilcheantair i gComhairle Ceantair an Iúir, Mhúrn agus an Dúin blaiseadh ar a bhfuil le fáil ón teanga uathúil, comhroinnte seo thar thréimhse coicíse.

Council Celebrates the Irish Language on World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has commissioned a series of 10 subtitled Irish language films to help highlight the importance of inclusivity on ‘World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development’. Funded by the Northern Ireland Executive, the inspiring films feature a diverse range of speakers — from a world-champion Irish dancer of Nigerian descent, to a Protestant and Unionist Irish speaker, Dr Ian Malcolm, who explains his passion for the language.

The UN General Assembly declared 21 May a World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development back in 2002 to provide an opportunity for deepening understanding of the values of cultural diversity.

The series of 10 short films entitled ‘Is leatsa í, it belongs to you’ will stream on the Council’s social media platforms from Friday 21 May until Friday 5 June. These short films aim to showcase the richness of cultural diversity within our ever-evolving shared communities in Northern Ireland and beyond. These vibrant, informative films will debunk some pre-existing stereotypes associated with the Irish language. They also aim to create an awareness that the Irish language belongs to people from all walks of life, irrespective of colour, creed or background.  

In the first film, Newry native Dr Niall Comer offers a brief flavour of the history of the Bagenal dynasty which stretched into the 17th and early 18th centuries in Newry.  We learn of their legacy and the impact that this influential family had on Newry and the surrounding areas.  

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Laura Devlin said, “I am delighted to see these 10 inspiring videos launched as part of the Council’s celebration of ‘World Day for Cultural Diversity’.  It is important for us to reflect on the diversity within our community and to celebrate the variety of cultures and backgrounds of people who engage with, speak and develop the Irish language.”

The films to be showcased include a diverse range of contributors, from a world-champion Irish dancer of Nigerian descent Elliot Kwelele, to a Protestant and Unionist Irish speaker, Dr Ian Malcolm, who explains his passion for the language. Linda Ervine speaks of her continued commitment to grow and develop understanding of this all-inclusive language within Unionist communities in east Belfast and beyond. Ola Majekodunmi, a journalist and poet, explains her love for the language and desire to eradicate pre-conceived beliefs associated with it. While Cian Ó Gríofa from the online platform Gaylgeoirí explains his quest to be a positive influential figure for the LGBTQ+ community.  Over the course of two weeks audiences across the district will enjoy small snapshots of what this unique and shared language has to offer.
