Ulster in Bloom Success for Saintfield and Newcastle Celebrated by Council

Saintfield and Newcastle are blooming with pride after green fingered community gardeners and dedicated council staff were recognised in the 2025 Ulster in Bloom Awards.

This year, Saintfield took first place in the Large Village category, while Newcastle earned a highly commended third place in the Small Town category.

The annual competition, organised by Translink and the Northern Ireland Local Government Association (NILGA), recognises the outstanding gardening achievements and environmental stewardship of local communities across Northern Ireland’s council areas.

This year’s entries showcased exceptional community pride, commitment, promotion of wellbeing and sustainability. From colourful village displays to vibrant urban planting schemes as well as initiatives which boost biodiversity and enhance the climate.

The 2025 Award winners by category are: Small Village - Ballynure (Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council); Village - Donaghmore (Mid Ulster District Council); Large Village -  Saintfield (Newry, Mourne and Down District Council); Small Town - Randalstown (Antrim and Newtownabbey); Town - Donaghadee (Ards and North Down Borough Council); Large Town/Small City - Antrim (Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council) and Large Town/City - Derry (Derry City and Strabane District Council)

The dedication and creativity of the ‘Saintfield Greens Team’ was recognised by the judges, who praised Saintfield’s entry for its exceptional Health and Wellbeing Garden, as well as its imaginative ‘Bugingham Palace’ feature. The creation of a new Sensory Garden in the Memorial Garden was also highlighted as an inspiring addition for residents and visitors alike.

Newcastle was also recognised for the floral features enhancing its popular seafront that secured it third place in the Small Town Award Category.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Councillor Philip Campbell, extended his congratulations to all those involved for their hard work and dedication. “The Ulster in Bloom Awards highlight the incredible pride, creativity and community spirit that flourish across our district,” said Cllr Campbell.

“For Saintfield to win first place and Newcastle to secure third place reflects the dedication of volunteers and community groups who work tirelessly to make our towns and villages greener, cleaner and more welcoming. Congratulations also to the dedicated Council staff on the ground.
