Summer Safety Event Equips Young People with Life-Saving Knowledge

An event to promote safety awareness among young people and encourage them to make positive choices held at Castlewellan Forest Park was organised by Newry, Mourne and Down Policing & Community Safety Partnership (NMD PCSP), in collaboration with the Downpatrick, Slieve Croob, Rowallane and Mournes District Electoral Areas (DEAs).

The successful 20 July summer safety initiative, which brought together representatives from the PSNI, Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS), Education Authority and YMCA-led groups, welcomed over 75 young people from across the four DEAs.

They took part in a range of engaging and interactive activities designed to equip them with essential knowledge to stay safe and make positive choices, with PSNI Local Neighbourhood Policing Team members joined by officers from the Tactical Support Group and Armed Response Unit.

Officers spoke with young people about the importance of making safe choices, understanding the risks associated with risk-taking behaviour and the potential consequences that poor decisions can have on their future. In addition, the interactive engagement gave participants the opportunity to ask questions and gain a greater understanding of the work involved in protecting and supporting local communities.

The NIFRS delivered a range of demonstrations, including essential fire safety education with its Specialist Rescue Team highlighting the risks associated with water environments and sharing valuable advice on how to stay safe. Through practical demonstrations and expert guidance, firefighters helped raise awareness of emergency responses, personal safety and the vital role of the organisation in protecting local communities.

Representatives from the ASCERT charity, which provides services that have helped reduce alcohol and drug related harm, delivered thought-provoking educational sessions focusing on the dangers of vaping, Spice and nitrous oxide, helping young people make informed choices and understand the risks associated with substance misuse.

Alongside the educational programme, participants enjoyed outdoor activities, including archery and axe throwing delivered by Life Adventures, creating a fun and memorable day. Following the organised programme, the event was opened to the public with an opportunity to explore PSNI and NIFRS vehicles and chat with emergency service personnel.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Glyn Hann said, “The summer safety event demonstrated the value of partnership working, with local agencies coming together to engage, educate and empower young people through practical learning and positive community engagement.

“By combining interactive activities with important safety advice, the Castlewellan event helped ensure participants left with greater awareness, knowledge and confidence to make safe choices.”
