Residents Encouraged to Get Active with Free Community Wellbeing Programmes
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is encouraging residents to improve their wellbeing, build confidence and connect with others through its free Be Active Local – Wellbeing Hubs programmes.
Funded by Sport NI through the London Marathon Foundation’s Inspiring Activity fund, the programmes aim to make physical activity accessible to people across the district, particularly those who may face barriers to participation or benefit from additional support.
Be Active Local, which is a pilot programme, aims to create a network of community wellbeing hubs across the district, bringing physical activity opportunities directly into local villages and communities. By working within existing community facilities, the programme enables residents to participate in activities closer to home, reducing isolation and encouraging stronger community connections while supporting long-term health and wellbeing.
Active Together is aimed at adults who want to become more active in a friendly, supportive environment. Activities may include multi-sport sessions, games, walking and movement activities, providing opportunities to improve fitness, build confidence and meet new people.
Inclusive Participation offers accessible and adaptable physical activity for people with disabilities, additional needs or those who would benefit from extra support to take part. The programme aims to build confidence and independence, while encouraging social connections and community involvement.
The third strand, Power of Play, supports children and families through play-based physical activity and is currently fully subscribed through participating schools and nurseries.
Residents are invited to register for the Active Together and Inclusive Participation programmes, which are currently delivered at community centres in Ballynahinch (Mondays), Killyleagh (Wednesdays) and Hilltown (Fridays). The programme will expand to Drumaness, Meigh and Newtownhamilton in the New Year, providing opportunities for even more people to get involved.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Glyn Hanna said, “Be Active Local – Wellbeing Hubs is about helping people of all abilities find opportunities to be active, improve their wellbeing and feel more connected to their local community.
“We know that getting involved in physical activity can sometimes feel challenging, particularly for those who experience social isolation, lack confidence or need additional support. These free programmes offer a welcoming environment where people can take part at their own pace, try something new and enjoy the benefits of being active alongside others.”
Cllr Hanna added: “I would encourage anyone who is interested in becoming more active to find out more about Active Together and Inclusive Participation and take advantage of these opportunities in their local community.”
The one-hour morning classes are held weekly and will continue until early December and all sessions are free. Participants do not need previous experience of sport or physical activity to take part. To find out more or to register contact aidan.burns@nmandd.org or call 0330 137 4288.
