Newry Market Set to Stage Culture Night
Newry Market Set To Stage Culture Night
Hot on the heels of Opry an Iuir and Iur Cinn Fleadh, two firm favourites in Newry’s growing cultural offering, comes Culture Night in Newry Market on Friday 16 September showcasing home-grown talent in music, visual arts, theatre and dance from 5pm until 11pm.
There will be plenty to see and do with local artist Richard Kelly working on his latest, large-scale canvas, or get involved with the Ring of Gullion Handcrafts and Art(ROGHA) workshops in felting, botanical printing and wood turning. Artist Mark O’Neill will exhibit some of his recent works, some of which form part of his current exhibition at the Sean Hollywood Arts Centre.
John Farrelly, caricaturist and cartoonist, is on-board too, but you will have to join the queue to get your hand on one of his sought-after sketches! Newpoint Theatre will take a break from treading the boards at the Town Hall with an abridged version of their new show, ‘A Shakespeare Miscellany’, giving you another chance to see a selection of this new work by the dynamic and talented stars of the future.
Fiona Flynn presents the best in musical theatre with her troupe of young stars singing show tunes and Newry Venture Scouts drummers will be showing off their skills and rhythms. The evening will round off with the relaxed and accomplished Mickey Murphy on guitar.
If you are light on your feet the St. Catherine’s Ceili Club will lead the pace and show you how it’s done, and the evening will be enhanced with great local produce. Give yourself the evening off from slaving over a hot stove and make your way to Newry Market for a bite to eat and a relaxed evening of arts, crafts, music, movement and theatre.
Meanwhile, over at Newry and Mourne Museum, you can enjoy contemporary folk band Kern from 7.30pm to 9pm, with traditional tunes from their album False Deceiver.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick said, “September has been a fantastic month of music, events and activities in Newry and Culture Night is a wonderful addition to the programme. Newry Market has been identified as a great local venue in the heart of the city and I look forward to meeting and enjoying all the artists and participants who will be there on Culture Night. Bring the family along and take part in the arts and crafts workshops, try out something new and help bring this quirky venue to life alongside our best and brightest local talent.”
