Footsteps in the Forest Brings Samhain Stories to Life at Slieve Gullion
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council marked the conclusion of Footsteps in the Forest 2026, which transformed Slieve Gullion Forest Park, into an atmospheric celebration of Samhain from Wednesday 21 to Tuesday 27 October.
Over the course of the event, visitors followed lantern-lit woodland trails and encountered mythical characters, theatrical performances and immersive storytelling inspired by the legends, folklore and ancient landscape of Slieve Gullion.
Drawing on the traditions of Samhain, when the veil between worlds was believed to be at its thinnest, the experience combined mystery, history and seasonal entertainment in one of Ireland’s most storied landscapes.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Glyn Hanna said, “Footsteps in the Forest once again brought the stories and traditions of Samhain vividly to life within the unique surroundings of Slieve Gullion Forest Park.
“It was wonderful to see families, residents and visitors enjoying the atmosphere, performances and storytelling throughout the event. I would like to thank everyone who attended, along with the performers, production teams, staff and partners whose work made this year’s experience possible.”
This year’s programme included sensory-friendly sessions each evening, providing a calmer experience for visitors who benefited from reduced sensory stimulation.
A dedicated Irish Language Night celebrated the stories and traditions of Samhain through the Irish language, while the Footsteps in the Forest Accessible Sessions took place on level ground in The Walled Garden.
Designed to remove the challenges of the woodland trail and mountain climb, the Accessible Sessions retained the characters, performances, folklore and atmosphere at the heart of the wider event. The programme also included a British Sign Language interpreted session.
Councillor Hanna continued: “Creating different ways for people to experience Footsteps in the Forest was an important part of this year’s programme.
“The sensory-friendly, Irish language and accessible sessions helped more visitors connect with the stories, heritage and traditions associated with Samhain in a setting suited to their needs.
Events such as Footsteps in the Forest also encourage visitors to explore more of Mourne Gullion Strangford. From our forests, mountains and geopark landscapes to our local food, attractions and places to stay, the destination offers many reasons to return throughout autumn and beyond.”
Footsteps in the Forest formed part of a wider programme of Halloween events and seasonal experiences taking place across Mourne Gullion Strangford, showcasing the destination’s landscapes, culture and heritage.
