Council Launches Drop-in Community Support Hubs
Residents across the district are being invited to drop in, connect and speak directly with Council Representatives and local support organisations as part of a new series of Community Support Hub drop-in events.
The first takes place at Newry Leisure Centre on Tuesday 27 January between 3pm and 6pm, with local people, community group members and local organisations invited to meet and connect with staff from a number of Council departments, statutory agencies and community organisations who can provide confidential advice, help and support.
The Community Support Hub is designed to provide people access to the right support from the right organisation, with advice on issues including housing, health and well-being, home and personal safety, training and employment and funding opportunities.
Council refuse, leisure, community engagement, health, tourism and business development team members will be joined at the Newry event by representatives from the PSNI, Northern Ireland Housing Executive, Education Authority, Translink, Southern Health and Social Care Trust and community sector organisations, Volunteer Now and Community Advice.
Funding for the Community Support Hub is being provided by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and the Northern Ireland Executive, with the initiative being co-ordinated by the Council’s District Electoral Area Forum Teams. The aim is to provide a welcoming and accessible space where people can meet directly with a wide range of local service providers, learn more about the support available to them and explore opportunities to get involved in local decision-making.
Residents can speak informally with Council and statutory agency representatives, ask questions, raise issues and receive information relevant to their needs or those of their communities.
There will also be an opportunity to learn how to access services, become involved in local initiatives, and contribute to shaping decisions that affect their area.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Philip Campbell, is encouraging people to get involved in the new initiative and play an active part. “At the heart of the Community Support Hub is connection. These drop-in events create opportunities for people to meet face-to-face with Council services, statutory partners and community organisations in one place, in a relaxed and approachable setting.
“By bringing people together, we can make it easier for people to get the information and support they need, strengthen local relationships, improve understanding of local services and ensure communities feel informed, supported and connected.”
The Newry event marks the first in a series of Community Support Hub drop-in sessions that will take place across the district. The next event will be held at Down Leisure Centre in Downpatrick on Wednesday, February 18, between 2pm and 5pm.
Residents and community groups are welcome to attend the events in Newry and Downpatrick, and no booking is required.
