Council Invites Businesses to Join District’s Make It Local Christmas Campaign
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is inviting local businesses to register their interest in taking part in its Make it Local marketing campaigns, designed to showcase local enterprise, boost trade and encourage residents and visitors to shop, dine and spend within the district.
Building on the success of recent initiatives supporting hospitality, retail, personal services and tourism, the Council is now planning its next promotion centred on the Christmas shopping season. This campaign aims to give businesses a timely boost during one of the busiest times of the year and the Council is encouraging enterprises from all sectors to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to take part.
Make it Local celebrates the people behind the businesses and the unique products and services they provide. By participating, businesses will gain increased visibility, with opportunities to reach new audiences through social media promotion, targeted advertising, print and outdoor campaigns, as well as access to the thematic photography and video features.
While the next campaign will focus on Christmas, those who express their interest may also be considered for inclusion in future Make it Local campaigns. This approach allows a broad range of enterprises, ranging from high street retailers, cafes and restaurants, to artisans, service providers and start-ups, to benefit from free promotion and support.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Glyn Hanna said, “The Christmas period is one of the most important trading times of the year for many local businesses.
“The Make it Local initiative gives businesses a platform to shine during the festive season and reminds residents of the creativity, talent and value they can find on their doorstep when choosing where to shop, dine and spend. We want to give every business the chance to be part of this campaign and share their story with the wider community. Whether you are long-established or just starting out, this is an opportunity to be seen, celebrated and supported.”
Cllr Hanna continued: “The festive season presents a valuable opportunity for businesses to connect with customers, attract new audiences and showcase what makes them unique. By taking part in the Make it Local Christmas campaign, businesses can increase their visibility, build brand awareness and strengthen their connection to the community.
“We want to encourage residents and visitors to think local first when choosing gifts, experiences, food and festive celebrations this Christmas, helping to ensure more spending stays within our local economy and supports businesses across the district.”
Expressions of Interest close on Friday 9 October 2026 at 5pm. While submitting an EOI does not guarantee selection, participants will be chosen based on geographical spread, sector variety, and the uniqueness of offering to help create a rich and representative campaign.
Businesses can complete the EOI form, learn more about the initiative and explore highlights from previous campaigns at www.newrymournedown.org/make-it-local or by emailing business@nmandd.org.
