An online Book of Condolence is also available for signing at: www.newrymournedown.org/chairpersons-book-of-condolences.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Pete Byrne said, “The passing of Pope Francis brings profound sorrow across our district. He was a truly great spiritual leader who championed the poor and marginalised and constantly demonstrated remarkable humility and courage.

His message of mercy and inclusion resonated throughout the world. At such a significant time it is important to allow our residents the opportunity to pay their own tributes and respects. I am therefore opening Books of Condolences at locations across the district, as well as opening a Book of Condolence online.”

My thoughts and prayers are with them, and I am aware that many of our residents will also be reflecting on this sad occasion.”

All condolence messages recorded by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council will be sent directly to the Vatican in Rome.
